The Tennessee Titans are a professional American football team based in Nashville, Tennessee. The Titans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. Previously known as the Houston Oilers, the team began play in 1960 in Houston, Texas, as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The Oilers won the first two AFL Championships, and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.
The team relocated from Houston to Tennessee in 1997, and played at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis for one season. The team then moved to Nashville in 1998 and played in Vanderbilt Stadium. For those two years, the team was known as the “Tennessee Oilers”, but changed its name to “Tennessee Titans” for the 1999 season. The team currently plays at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, which opened in 1999 as Adelphia Coliseum. The Titans’ training facility is at Saint Thomas Sports Park, a 31-acre (13 ha) site at the MetroCenter complex in Nashville.
The Titans are the only NFL team to be based in the state of Tennessee, and the city of Nashville has been home to the Titans/Oilers franchise for longer than any other NFL franchise.
The Titans were originally founded as the Houston Oilers, a charter member of the American Football League, in 1960. They were owned by Bud Adams, a Houston oilman, who had made several previous unsuccessful bids for an NFL expansion franchise. The Oilers appeared in the first three AFL championships, and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.
In 1999, the Oilers moved from Houston to Nashville, and Adams changed the team’s name to the “Tennessee Titans”. The team has played all of its home games in Nashville since moving to Tennessee in 1997.
The Titans have appeared in the playoffs ten times since joining the NFL in 1970. They played in the AFC Championship Game in 1999 and 2000, losing both times to the eventual Super Bowl champion (the St. Louis Rams and the Baltimore Ravens, respectively). The Titans reached the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history in 2000, but lost to the Rams, 23–16.
